Arsenal 2 Fenerbahce 0 (agg 5-0) : Goal Highlights & Post Match Reaction

Published 27th August 2013 Written by Jeff @ArsenalTrend Videos By ArsenalSupremo

A brace from Aaron Ramsey earned Arsenal a 2-0 win over Fenerbahce on Tuesday that confirmed their place in the Champions League group phase for the 16th consecutive season.  Leading 3-0 from last week's first leg, in which Ramsey also scored, Arsene Wenger's men finished the job in unfussy fashion at the Emirates Stadium thanks to a goal in each half from the in-form Welsh midfielder.

It was a third straight victory for Arsenal since the shock of their 3-1 loss to Aston Villa on the opening day of the Premier League season, but an injury to Lukas Podolski took some of the gloss off the evening. The German appeared to succumb to a hamstring injury early in the second half, which will only increase calls from impatient fans for Wenger to add new players to his squad in the final days of the transfer window.

The first-leg result meant Fenerbahce had not travelled in hope, and they must now await the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision on their appeal against a two-year UEFA ban for match-fixing, which will be delivered on Wednesday. Arsenal had an early fright when Raul Meireles deflected Bacary Sagna's attempted clearance back towards goal and Wojciech Szczesny had to produce a reflex save, but the tie was wrapped up inside 25 minutes.

Podolski sent Theo Walcott into the Fenerbahce box and although he was dispossessed, Caner Erkin's sliding challenge sent the ball straight to Ramsey, who swept home from 12 yards. Fenerbahce goalkeeper Volkan Demirel prevented Olivier Giroud from increasing Arsenal's advantage with a sharp save, before Szczesny displayed his alertness at the other end by touching Emmanuel Emenike's drive onto the post.

The aggregate scoreline robbed the game of any real drama, but there was a moment of potential significance early in the second period when Podolski had to be stretchered off with what looked to be a hamstring problem. Wenger can scarcely afford to lose more first-team players, and the appearance of sole close-season signing Yaya Sanogo from the bench only served to highlight his lack of options in the forward line.

There was solace, of sorts, on the pitch, however. Demirel produced a finger-tip save to deny Santi Cazorla and Walcott bent a free-kick against the crossbar, before Ramsey made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute with an insouciant side-foot volley from Kieran Gibbs's cross. Ramsey walked off the pitch and onto the substitutes' bench before injury time had elapsed, without being replaced, but there was no indication that he, too, had succumbed to injury.

Fulham 1 Arsenal 3 : Match Highlights and Post Match Reaction from MOTM Aaron Ramsey and Arsene Wenger

Published 24th August 2013 Written By Jeff @ArsenalTrend Edited by Gordon @Arsenal_Supremo

Lukas Podolski scored a brace and Olivier Giroud grabbed his third goal in as many games as Arsenal recovered from its poor start to the Premier League season to earn its first points with a 3-1 win at London rivals Fulham on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger's team bounced back from a home defeat against Aston Villa in a convincing manner, looking in total control most of the time at a rain-soaked Craven Cottage.

Giroud scored the opener in the 14th minute with a left-footed shot from close range and Podolski doubled the visitors' lead four minutes before halftime with an excellent finish. Podolski completed the comfortable victory in the 68th after being set up by Santi Cazorla. England forward Darren Bent pulled one back for Fulham in the 77th.

It was Fulham's first loss this season after it opened the campaign with a win at Sunderland.

"It's never easy to play away or win away and we did it in a convincing way,'' Wenger said. ``We had a disappointing result against Villa and it was important to respond.''

The win is likely to appease Arsenal fans, who voiced their discontent and concerns after the Villa loss, urging their club to bring in new players.

Wenger, who is still hoping he can make a marquee signing before the end of the transfer window, left England midfielder Jack Wilshere on the bench to give Podolski a start while Fulham manager Martin Jol handed a debut to England midfielder Scott Parker, recruited from Tottenham earlier this week.

The match was played in difficult conditions, with heavy rain falling on the pitch. Arsenal created its first chance after 12 minutes when Theo Walcott's effort was parried away by Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale, who replaced the injured Maarten Stekelenburg.

Giroud opened the scoring two minutes later, tucking in the ball past Stockdale for his third goal in three games in all competitions this season after Aaron Ramsey's attempt deflected into the French striker's path.

Giroud had also scored in Arsenal's opening 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa and during the 3-0 win at Fenerbahce in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off.

"We picked up where we left off at Fenerbahce and played very well,'' said Aaron Ramsey. ``Lukas has a lethal left foot and proved that again.''

Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny kept the Gunners ahead soon after with a double save, first blocking Adel Taarabt's shot then stopping Damien Duff's right-footed shot in the 16th minute.

Fulham then created chances through Taarabt but lacked the finishing touch. Parker went close after being assisted by Dimitar Berbatov but his left-footed shot from outside the box went over the bar in the 30th.

Arsenal doubled its lead ten minutes later as Podolski showed his finishing qualities, scoring from the edge of the box after a rebound off Walcott's shot.

Fulham got off to a good second-half start and made Szczesny work, with the Arsenal `keeper forced to deny another of Taarabt's efforts minutes before Bacary Sagna's sliding tackle stopped Parker's burst into the area.

But Podolski sealed Arsenal's win in the 68th minute with a shot between the legs of a defender that ended in the far corner.

Bent, on a season-long loan deal from Aston Villa, gave the home fans something to cheer, tapping in the ball from close range after Szczesny failed to block a shot from Berbatov.

Fenerbahce 0 Arsenal 3 - Match Highlights and Post Match Reaction

Published 23rd August 2013 by @ArsenalTrend

Aaron Ramsey scored one goal and set up another to inspire Arsenal to a 3-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce in their Champions League first leg play-off on Wednesday.

The North London club now stand on the brink of a 17th straight qualification for the lucrative pool stages after a dreadful start to their Premier League campaign with defeat to Aston Villa.

A potential banana skin in the Turkish capital instead ended up as a smooth ride for the 2006 finalists as Aaron Gibbs and Oliver Giroud with a late penalty joined Ramsey on the score sheet.

The breakthrough after a dull opening half arrived in the 51st minute when Ramsey played in Theo Walcott down the right wing and the winger's cross was allowed to reach Gibbs who crashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Arsenal were trying to bounce back from a disappointing debut to their domestic season when they crashed 3-1 at home to Villa and endured the wrath of their fans who are growing increasingly impatient with the club's lack of activity in the transfer market.

Ramsey then scored a fortunate second goal with 24 minutes left when Fenerbahce 'keeper Volkan Demirel inexplicably allowed a routine shot from outside the box slip under his hands for a mistake that will haunt him for the rest of his career.

Giroud then planted a confident penalty in the top left hand corner after Michal Kadlec brought down Walcott on 77 minutes that has virtually put the tie beyond doubt.

The 'Gunners' have a proud record of having qualified for the group stages of every Champions League competition since 1998 but they laboured during a lacklustre first half that featured no goals and few chances.

Fenerbahce meanwhile were looking to reach the pool stages despite a potential ban looming over them for match fixing that has gone to appeal and will be decided on the eve of the draw.

The odds were stacked against them having beaten English opposition only once in European Cup history dating back to 1969 when they eliminated Manchester City 2-1 on aggregate.

The Istanbul club rarely threatened the Arsenal goal throughout the match and Arsene Wenger's team were able to take a firm stranglehold on the tie with three unanswered second half goals that will silence the critics at least temporarily.

The second leg is set for next Tuesday at the Emirates Stadium.

Team Line Ups

Fenerbahce : Demirel Irtegun  Yobo , Alves , Kadlec 5; Topal 4 (Gokhan, 46, ), Meireles (Potuk, 82), Belozoglu ; Kuyt , Sow , Webo 5 (Emenike, 62,).

Arsenal : Szczesny ; Sagna , Mertesacker , Koscielny  (Jenkinson, 33,), Gibbs ; Ramsey , Wilshere , Rosicky ; Walcott  (Monreal, 87), Cazorla , Giroud  (Podolski, 82).

Kieran Gibbs Post Match Quotes Via Arsenal.com
"In terms of putting us in a good position, it [the win] has given us a bit of togetherness," said Gibbs. "I think people have seen tonight what the team is capable of and we have to take this now into the [rest] of the season.
"It [the goal] was a good moment for me. To be honest I felt we deserved to be up in the first half. I knew that to get an away goal tonight would put us in a strong position and we were desperate for that goal. I felt we deserved it and we got our rewards in the end after a good performance.
"I thought we were playing well from the start of the game and to be honest I thought we were better in the first half - we got a little bit apprehensive in the second half because we really wanted to get the goal. But we knew that the chances were going to come and it was a case of taking them when we got the opportunity.
"We know what we're capable of so we don't need to prove it to anyone. But we need to prove to ourselves that we can be consistent and start producing results week-in, week-out. That's down us and that's purely what we're focused on."

Transfer Target Luiz Gustavo would love to play for Arsenal

Published 12th August 2013 By ArsenalSupremo

Today Sky Sports have confirmed that Arsenal have tabled a £17.2 million bid for the Bayern Munich holding midfield player and almost every newspaper in Britain is also reporting the story and is close to joining Arsenal.

Gustavo was asked in an interview on Arsenal interview and below are just some of the quotes on whether he was keen to join the Gunners.
“My contract with Bayern runs until 2015, but it is very important that I play first-team football to keep getting called up for the national team.

“I am in a delicate situation at Bayern, and this needs sorting out. I have personal and professional reasons to move. I have heard about the Arsenal interest. It’s a big club we’re talking about here, so of course I’d like to play for them.”

“Arsenal play a very attractive brand of football and are in the Champions League,” he added. “They also have a very clever manager in Arsene Wenger. Even when Bayern beat them in the last Champions League, you could see they are not pushovers.”
Here is Sky Sports Confirming the News

This could be the first major signing for Arsenal and would be a fantastic addition to the side and would add much need steel in the middle of midfield.

Arsenal 3 Manchester City 1 : Goal Highlights

Published 11th August 2013 By @Arsenal_Supremo

Arsenal finished off there Pre Season preparations with an excellent 3 1 win over Manchester City in a sell out in Helsinki. Despite not dominating the play and possession it was Arsenal who took their chances as Theo Walcott struck first with a great chipped goal as Aaron Ramsey provided him an excellent assist to make it 1 0.

Ramsey then got on the score sheet himself as he rounded the Goalkeeper Joe Hart to make the scoreline 2 0.

The Gunners then showed that they had the killer instinct in front of goal as a beautiful chipped cross into Giroud from Walcott and finished off with a lob from the French striker gave the Arsenal a 3 goal lead. They didn't manage to keep a clean sheet as Negredo scored a consolation goal for Manchester City and the game finished 3 1.

Arsene Wenger Post Match Comments
It was a game of good intensity with two teams who were really putting all the effort on. We had a good tactical discipline. I'm pleased with many aspects of our game, even if there are some points to work on. Overall it's positive tactically [and] attitude-wise. We scored goals, created chances and were always highly focused
I think what is important is the strength of the squad. Today is one game. We want to play 55 games and we are maybe a bit thin squad-wise to go through a whole season.

Luis Suarez wants a friendly resolution to his transfer away from Liverpool

Published 8th August 2013 By Gordon @Arsenal_Supremo

Luis Suarez has spoke out yet again about his transfer saga and hopes his transfer away from his club is friendly and amiable between Liverpool and Arsenal. He is still determined to leave Liverpool despite the strong words against him.

"I'm still defending the Liverpool shirt and I will do so until the last minute," Suarez is quoted as saying Marca.

"My aim is to reach an agreement with the club in a friendly manner and I hope the clause we agreed a year ago is fulfilled. Up to now, it hasn't been.

"It's not that I want to or am desperate to leave, but I like things to be clear and a year ago I made my position to the club clear."

"Gerrard has a lot of history with Liverpool and his words are very important but everyone should understand that I need to play the Champions League to keep growing as a footballer," added Suarez.

"Now I have the chance, I want to take it.

"A Champions League team (Arsenal) is making a big effort to get me and one always wants to be where they feel comfortable."

Real Madrid have been interested in signing Suarez and he admits he would jump at the chance of joining the Spanish giants

"There were a lot of rumours (about Real) that were different to reality: Madrid never called me personally or Liverpool to try and negotiate," continued Suarez.

"Every player aspires to reach the top and Real Madrid is among the most important clubs in the world. It would be very difficult to say no to Real Madrid."

Explosive interview from Luis Suarez as he tells Liverpool he should let him join Arsenal

Published 6th July 2013 By Arsenal Supremo

In an explosive interview Luis Suarez gave to the Telegragh and The Guardian Suarez insists Liverpool have broken their promise they made to him if they didn't qualify for the Champions League they would let him leave the club.

"Last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and I stayed on the understanding that if we failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season I'd be allowed to go," he revealed. "I gave absolutely everything last season but it was not enough to give us a top-four finish – now all I want is for Liverpool to honour our agreement."

"I spoke with Brendan Rodgers several times and he told me: 'Stay another season, and you have my word if we don't make it then I will personally make sure that you can leave.'"

"I don't feel betrayed [by Liverpool] but the club promised me something a year ago just as I promised them that I would stay and try everything possible to get us into the Champions League.

"They gave me their word a year ago and now I want them to honour that. And it is not just something verbal with the coach but something that is written in the contract. I'm not going to another club to hurt Liverpool."

Luis Suarez is desperate to play in the Champions League and cannot wait any longer.

"I'm 26. I need to be playing in the Champions League. I waited one year and no one can say that I did not give everything possible with my team-mates last season to get us there."

He continues: "It is not as if I am asking to move to a local rival. And I would not consider moving to a club outside the Champions League. I have made my desire to move known in private various times and now it feels like the time for me to make it public.

"My priority is Champions League football. This is about me doing what is right for my career at this moment in time.

"Right now the Premier League is the biggest and most important league. My record shows that I'm not the kind of player who wants to change clubs every season and I would have no problem playing in England for many more years. If we are just talking about the level of the football and the way the supporters are then it is an incredible league. Any player in the world at the moment would like to play here."

But it is a different league, the Champions League, that hangs heaviest: this is a theme to which he returns often. "I feel I have done enough to be playing in the Champions League at this stage of my career," he says. "Now there is an option for me to do that and I want very much to take it. I went a long time at Ajax without playing many games in the Champions League. I am ambitious, I want to be there."

Didier Drogba returned to haunt Arsenal yet again as 2 goals form the former Chelsea player condemned Arsenal to their first Pre season tour defeat. Arsenal led with a first half goal from Theo Walcott but in the second half Arsenal conceded a soft penalty as Drogba went down easy in the penalty box with a slight knock from Miquel. He easily sent Szczesny the wrong way to get the scores level. In the 88 minute Wesley Sneijer provided Drogba with a brilliant assist and scored his second goal of the game to seal the win the Turkish side.

“Drogba did well when he came on,” the boss told the post-game press conference.

“He still has the resources, you could see that yesterday as well. He has kept that physical strength and his intelligent game and he finished well.

“I must say we were exhausted in the end, especially Mertesacker who played the two full games and was just back from Asia.

“He [Drogba] took advantage of it. Honestly the penalty was very, very, very, very, very, very soft! It was classic Drogba.

On the subject of transfers Wenger confirmed that Roma and Crystal Palace would be taking Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh off our books.

Arsenal Supremo Verdict : The lack depth to the squad showed in this match and I hope that before the transfer window closes Arsene Wenger must buy quality players so that we can challenge for trophies and more importantly the Premier League.
