John Hartson : Arsenal should sign Wayne Rooney

Former Arsenal player John Hartson believes that the Gunners should do their up most to sign Manchester United's Wayne Rooney.

"I think Rooney would be a fantastic signing," the Welshman told Goal. "He's actually coming into his prime.

"He's only about 27, 28 and you don't play your best football until this stage of your career so, in terms of his experience and everything he's done at Manchester United, I think he would be a brilliant signing and Arsenal fans would welcome him into the side."

"I think you will see Rooney take up a deeper role because of his experience and when he drops into that little hole behind the striker, he gives the centre-backs a real problem because he needs to be marked, and you couldn't let a player like him come in on the half-turn and face your back four because he will just cause riots in there.

"He can pick people out, he can slide balls through, break the centre backs by getting between the lines and by playing balls over the top.

"He has unbelievable individual ability and if they can find the right position for him, he'd be brilliant. Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane both dropped into deeper roles as they got older and wiser.

"Arsenal fans are used to players like Rooney. They've had Dennis Bergkamp, Liam Brady, Anders Limpar, they've had great ball players over the years and Rooney would be a magic signing, I'm a big fan of his.

"So, for me, I would just break the bank and go and get Rooney if United will let him go."


Harton wants Arsenal to finally  end the eight years without a trophy :

"The only thing that is letting them down right now is the fact they haven't won a major trophy for six or seven seasons which is disappointing.

"They've come close, they've hit the post if you like, they've lost in cup finals and when you talk about Arsenal, you're so used to talking about them winning things but they've not won anything.

"They've qualified for the Champions League, which is a great achievement for many years now on the spin so Wenger deserves huge credit for that but they're still a massive club and, in my opinion, they will have no problem attracting world-class players."

Arsenal Legend Freddie Ljungberg returns to the club in an ambassadorial role

Arsenal today have announced that Freddie Ljungberg will return to the club to work in ambassadorial role which will entail him to help the Gunners reach out to more fans around the globe.

Head of marketing, Charles Allen, told the club's official website: "We are delighted that Freddie has agreed, in this ambassadorial role, to help us reach more of our passionate supporters around the globe. He is much loved by our fans and it’s great to have him back."

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry spoke to SkySports and insists that Arsenal should not settle for fourth place.

"Yes, they finished in the top four but there is only one champion - Man United. I'm a competitor so that's the only thing I will remember from the season - Man United won the league. You're going to have to do better than what United did this year.

"Chelsea I'm sure are thinking about the same thing right now, or Man City. Tottenham are going to think, 'how can we come back into the top four?' All the teams are going to be thinking, 'how can we win this title?'

Arsenal Legends Tony Adams & Robert Pires urge Arsenal to spend big on players.

Tony Adams and Robert Pires spoke to Sky Sports after taking part in the Indesit Support your Hero event. They spoke about the fact that Arsenal must spend big and add experience to the squad to able to compete for the title next season Tony Adams said :

"Lately Arsenal have become very solid and (Laurent) Koscielny and (Per) Mertesacker have gained a confidence together, but defensively I think they are still short - I'd like to see them sign another centre-back, a couple of full-backs and possibly a keeper."

"The fans are desperate for a trophy of some sort," he added. "I would like the players to get used to winning; if you have never had that experience of crossing the line as a winner you don't know what it is like to be a winner. "Jack Wilshere is very important to the club, but you can't rush him. I think he has played more games than Arsene (Wenger) would have wanted him to play following his injury, but he's such an influential player for us."

Robert Pires added his verdict : "In my opinion I think Arsenal need to buy English players. "He (Wenger) has changed the philosophy at the club, he brought in young players like (Theo) Walcott, (Alex-Oxlade) Chamberlain and (Aaron) Ramsey, these players are very good for the future but now they need to buy some players with experience to give a good mix."

Arsenal Legend Ian Wright wants Cavani and Ozil at Arsenal

Ian Wright is pleased to hear Arsene Wenger's plans to spend big on player in the summer and hopes that the boss will stay true to his word and purchase some world class players to strengthen the side. Since the departure of Robin Van Persie Arsenal haven't replaced him with a proven goalscorer that has the ability to score 30 goals a season. He also suggests that Wenger needs to buy a defender and a solid defensive midfield player. Here is what he had to say :

"It’s hard to put your finger on specific players but for me, as a forward, I like the look of Edinson Cavani," Wright, who scored 185 goals for Arsenal, told The Sun.

"My dream player for Arsenal would be Mesut Ozil. I think he’s amazing and you could put him in midfield alongside Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta.

"We need two centre-halves and we could always get another strong midfielder, but who is really available out there?

"Finally, we need two big-name strikers to go with what we’ve already got so that everyone can raise their game and aspire to be at the same level.

"Then we’d have the whole squad playing for places and playing to win trophies because there’s proper competition. Arsenal need to get that mentality within the squad.”

On this day in 2001: Arsenal honour Rocastle with win over North London rivals Tottenham

Remembering David Rocastle
On this day in 2001, Arsenal beat their North London rivals Tottenham 2-0. It was an emotionally charged day with the football world reeling from the news that former Arsenal player David Rocastle had lost his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that morning. A minute's silence took place before the match, with the occasion impeccably marked by both sets of fans.

Tottenham had caretaker-manager David Pleat in charge after George Graham was relieved of his duties two weeks before. New managers in charge Glenn Hoddle and John Gorman were in the stands watching on running the rule over their new charges. Given the circumstances, it was understandable that a subdued home side took a while to get going but Thierry Henry did hit a post early on in the game.


Arsenal piled  the pressure on after half time and the breakthrough came with 20 minutes to go when Robert Pires cut inside from the left and expertly curled his shot into the far corner past the outstretched Neil Sullivan. Victory was sealed four minutes from time, Henry getting past Chris Perry before slotting home.

At ArsenalSupremo we look back at the past Arsenal Legends today is the turn of Nwankwo Kanu who played for Arsenal from 1999–2004 and was voted 13th in the "Gunners' Greatest 50 Players" poll. At Arsenal Kanu won the Premier League twice FA Cup twice and a Community Shield. In February 1999, after just twelve games and one goal for Inter, Kanu was signed by Arsenal for around £4.15 million. He made his debut against Sheffield United in the FA Cup.


This match was controversial due to the fact at the time the score was 1 1, the Sheffield United goalkeeper kicked the ball out of touch so that treatment could be given to an injured player. When the ball was thrown back into play by Ray Parlour, although it was intended for Kelly, Kanu wasn't aware of the circumstances. Thinking it to be an attacking move, he chased the throw-in down the right wing unchallenged, and centered the ball for Marc Overmars, then scored to make the match 2 1. However immediately after the match Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger offered to right the error and replay the match  in the end, Arsenal won the match 2 1. Even after this incident it didn't take long for  Kanu to kick started his career by scoring his debut goal in the next round of the FA Cup against Derby County after coming off the bench.


Kanu quickly became known for his goal scoring from the bench, scoring important goals against Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all as a substitute. He was now tuning into a fan's favorite and became known for his two-fingered salute – something that he later explained was based on the team's nickname, The Gunners – which started in 1999 against Middlesbrough. In 1999 Kanu was named African Footballer of the Year for the second time and in 1999-2000 season his goal scoring record stood at 17 goals in 50 games which included a magnificent hat trick in fifteen minutes.


August 2001 at the time Fulham bid around 7 million for Kanu while at Arsenal his appearance for the club were becoming less and less especially when Thierry Henry was on the scene and became the club's first choice. Kanu won the double in 2002 a FA Cup in 2003 (as an unused sub) and the Premier League title in 2004. Altogether he played 197 games for Arsenal ( almost nearly half of them was a substitute), scoring 44 goals. In the summer of 2004, after his contract with Arsenal ended, he moved to West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer. In 2008, Kanu was voted 13th in the "Gunners' Greatest 50 Players" poll.
