Is Mesut Özil the man to fire Arsenal to the title this season?

Arsenal fans have been made to wait two months, but their first marquee signing of the summer was worth it. Having already missed out on stellar strikers Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney, Arsene Wenger appears to have finally found some joy with another midfielder. But never mind, the capture of Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil is just cause for giddiness among the Gunners faithful.

After batting away persistent questioning and vitriol all summer, Wenger and Co. have finally come up trumps with their spanking-new ’No.10’’ With the Spanish giants signing Gareth Bale and Isco this summer, the talented German has become the sacrificial lamb for Carlo Ancelotti’s unforgiving new regime. But after three seasons at the Bernabeu, Madrid’s loss is the Gunners’ gain. While they’re still looking light up front despite a late attempt to snatch Demba Ba on loan from Chelsea, the capture of Ozil alone has brightened the outlook in North London, especially if the in-form Olivier Giroud continues firing.

So how will he slot into Wenger’s rigid 4-3-3 at the Emirates? Well, about as comfortably as Cinderella’s size fives, you’d expect. “ No player across Europe’s top five leagues has fashioned more assists since his move to Real Madrid’’ Arsenal fans are dreaming of the devastation to be caused by Santi Cazorla and his new partner at the tip of midfield with good reason, dependent on injuries and how Wenger chooses to play it, of course. But you don’t pay £42.5m for a player who won’t play in his best position, which could mean a shift out wide for Cazorla if both Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta are fit. Ozil, like his new Spanish team-mate, is predominantly a creator with the ability to chip in with his fair share of goals.


No player across Europe’s top five leagues has fashioned more assists than Ozil's 47 since his move to Real Madrid - and that's why Wenger is likely to create a team centered around his precocious new play maker. Indeed, since the 2008/09 campaign he's posted a minimum of 12 assists per season. That’s helped by his set-piece skills – he was Madrid’s regular free-kick and corner taker – which is good news for Gunners fans tired of Theo Walcott’s less-than stellar deliveries. With 84% passing accuracy last season, Ozil boasts a figure almost five percentage points higher than that of last season’s La Liga average – made even more impressive by his risk taking position.

More than spray the ball around comfortably in midfield, the 24-year-old makes things happen. His goal scoring record isn't that bad either  in fact, Ozil boasted La Liga’s best conversion rate last season after netting with 9 of his 30 shots (that’s 41% accuracy better than Lionel Messi’s 35%).

Simply, there’s absolutely nothing to dislike about this transfer from a Gunners perspective, and that’s rarely said where Arsenal fans are concerned. On the other hand Madrid supporters aren't happy, and they take some pleasing. The North Londoners might well not be knocking on the door of a first title in 10 years come May, but Ozil is precisely the type of signing the club have cried out for to at least stand a chance of competing where it matters. Breaking their transfer record almost three times over will be worth every penny where this one’s concerned.

The Mysterious Case of Gervinho

Arsenal’s Gervinho ‘Forehead’ has had his fair share of stick. Ever since his 11m move to Arsenal from Lille, the winger hasn’t quite made his mark, has been unable to come to terms with the pace and rigours of the Premier League, and has generally divided opinion, to put it mildly.

Unpredictable is the word which comes to mind when one watches the Ivorian on the field; when on the ball, he certainly has a few tricks up his sleeves and an aura of unpredictability to his game, which on paper should be an asset but as we’ve seen, it’s not always quite worked out in his favour.

Over the years, Arsenal sides have been known for their free-flowing football and attacking prowess. Since the last few seasons, however, things have changed. Opposition managers seem to have devised certain ways to shut Arsenal down and prevent them from playing their game. It simple: get men behind the ball, pack your own half, and let Arsenal pass in front of you in non-dangerous positions, denying them space to play their trademark free-flowing, quick-passing game.

All of which is usually followed by a quick counter attack or a dangerous ball above Arsenal’s midfield to put them a goal down. Rinse and repeat.

More and more teams have started employing this simple tactic now. It is therefore no wonder that this season, in particular, Arsenal have had trouble finding the net, or even mustering up an effort on goal until late in the game.

All of which explains why Wenger has opted to deploy Gervinho’s as a center-forward: the player’s quick feet and dribbling, excellent close-control, pace and movement should provide an excellent way of breaking packed, stubborn opposition defenses.

Operating mainly from the left wing last season, as an inverted-winger with a tendency to drift inwards the manager has used Gervinho in the center-forward position this season, but more in a del Bosque-style false-9, rather than as a traditional target-man. On paper, this should work out well for his team, and Gervinho is certainly a player who possesses all the qualities to make it work, he can dribble his way in and out of tight places, even when he’s closely marked, keep the ball in sticky situations, and bring Arsenal’s wingers (such as Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski) all of whom have the tendency to drift inside rather than stick to the byline into play as well.

And while the Ivorian did enjoy an explosive start to the season albeit a brief one, scoring a few goals while settling into the new position he was being asked to play in, this horrendous Torres-esque miss from last night Capital One Cup game against Bradford, from 2 yards out no less, pretty much sums him up as a player, as well as his time at Arsenal.

To his credit, Gervinho is industrious and an extremely hard, always looking to create something when on the ball, even getting into all the right positions. So why hasn't it worked out for him at Arsenal? Is it simply a lack of confidence in front of goal, or is the player that Arsenal paid £11m for simply not good enough? I highly doubt it’s the latter, especially when one of the brightest young talents in world football, Eden Hazard says that he’s the best player he’s played with!

Abou Diaby Unfulfilled Potential ?

Arsenal midfielders Abou Diaby is a top player when he is fit. There lies the problem “when he is fit.” Diaby, a player who is held in high regard by Arsenal fans, and everyone in world football, for his ability to dribble past opponents with ease with close ball control, who also contains an excellent first touch and is adept in both attack and defence.

When fully fit, there is no doubt that Diaby is one of the best box to box midfielder’s in the Premier League, and this is why he is one of the first names on the team sheet for Arsenal and France. It is clear to see that when Diaby plays for Arsenal, he fills the physical void that was left when Song left Arsenal for Barcelona last summer, and he is the missing link in our midfield. It has been said that the reason Wenger let Song go to Barcelona was because he said he had a replacement in Diaby, but once again, injuries had gotten the better of Diaby this season.

Since joining the Gunners in 2006, Diaby has been side-lined 37 times. During that time, torn MCL’s, broken legs, ankles and hamstring injuries have seen the Frenchmen struggle to get in a consistent run of matches.

This summer is crucial for Arsenal and though they haven’t signed any star players yet, the indications are such that some marquee names could arrive at the club. So one must question themselves, is this the end of Abou Diaby?

Diaby signed with the Gunners from French club Auxerre for £2m when he was 19, choosing to shape his career in North London, instead of signing with rivals Chelsea.

With so much promise and expectation, why Diaby hasn’t developed into a world-class player during his eight years at Arsenal? Diaby has featured in 42% of Arsenal’s Premier League games over the past eight seasons, and has featured 182 times since joining the club at the start of 2006.

Diaby’s career has been unable to make significant progress as a player over the past years, and it has affected both Arsenal and France. The Arsenal midfielder has played in 40 games over the last three seasons, most notably in 2011/2012 when Diaby made five appearances off the bench. When he has played more than 30 minutes this season, the Gunners have won 12 games from a possible 14, losing to only Chelsea and Manchester City. Meanwhile, France has lost only once post-World Cup, when Diaby has played for a minimal 45 minutes. Diaby being fragile and injury prone is clear, but his influence on both sides has been missed.

Diaby’s statistics show that the Frenchman’s absence from the side is massive. Diaby is one of the best passers with an 88.05 passing percentage, and is also one of the club’s top players in terms of interceptions and completed dribbles. It was reported at the end of March, that the Frenchman would be shelved for approximately nine months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Diaby has ended another season sidelined, and it leaves many fans curious as to what the future holds for the Arsenal midfielder.

The Arsenal board could sell him, but what side would be interested in taking a gamble and signing him? With Diaby heading into what should be the peak of his career; is he capable of staying fit and displaying why he could be one of the top midfielders in world football? What is certain is that failure to stay fit over the next few seasons will see Diaby become the man that should have, could have and would have, but didn't.

Who is the better left back : Kieran Gibbs OR Nacho Monreal?

Who should start?
When Kieran Gibbs got injured in January, Wenger had to get a Left Back because he couldn't rely on Santos. Nacho played when Gibbs was injured, but when Gibbs came back, Monreal was benched. So that raised a question in my mind, Who is better?

This season Gibbs made 34 appearances, only 4 were off the bench. While Moneral made 21 appearances for Malaga, before he moved to Arsenal where he made 11 appearances, starting all of them except one.

Now let's look at their statistics.

He scored one amazing goal against Swansea when they played out a 2-2 draw. He had 5 assists this season. He had an average of 2.7 tackles a game. He also made an average of 2.4 interceptions a game. He averaged 41 passes a game. His passing Accuracy was about 84%.

Nacho Monreal made some great contributions towards the end of the season

He scored a crucial winner at Swansea, when Arsenal won 2-0. He also made a game winning assist when Arsenal beat Aston Villa 2-1. At Malaga He scored a goal and had 2 assists. He averaged 2.6 tackles a game. He made an average of  of 2.3 interceptions a game. He averaged 45 passes a game. His passing Accuracy was 84%.

Final Verdict

Arsenal have two great left backs. We should expect to see them battle through out next season. Based on statistics they are about the same. But, I personally think Gibbs creates more chance for Arsenal, his movement is better than Monreal. And, I think he would have had more goals if he took more shots, He always looks to pass the ball first, but that might not right the decision everytime.

So finally, The best LB is Kieran Gibbs but not by much, Nacho Monreal will provide good competition for him and maybe even win the starting position next season. What are your thoughts do let us know in the comments below.

Is the Asia Tour helping Arsenal?

Arsenal head to Asia for the third straight year. But, Is the tour helping Arsenal? It is increasing the fan base that's all. The players are being put at risk of getting injured just so the club can gain profit. That's the reason why the Asia Tour is not a good idea. When you trying to win a trophy the most important thing is keeping players fit throughout the season. But having the players travel from Indonesia to Vietnam to Japan will increase the chance of a player's injury.


So what Should Arsenal Do? Arsenal should go to only one Asian country. Or they should play friendly games in Europe. The Emirates Cup should have more games, because it tests Arsenal players and prepares them better for next season.

Gonzalo Higuain could be a great signing for Arsenal

The arrival of Gonzalo Higuain will excite many fans, because he is a  proven goalscorer with club and country. He has scored 122 goals for Real Madrid in 266 appearances. He has scored 20 goals in 32 games for Argentina. He has great movement off the ball. Arsenal are getting a player that has a lot to prove and also a player that can only get better. He is very similar to Van Persie in that he can chances out of nothing.

Gonzalo Higuain  signed for Real Madrid in 2006 for €12 million
Higuain will make Arsenal title contenders. I can't wait to see him combine with Walcott and Cazorla. I think he will make them better players. Arsenal fans should expect at least 20 goals form him next season. Higauin has played with Ronaldo, Messi, Raul, Van Nistelrooy, Zinedine Zidane, and many other great players. He will bring a lot of experience to the Arsenal team.

Gonzalo Higuain looks finally set to join Arsenal

So it finally looks like Gonzalo Higuain after many weeks of rumours, he has been reported in London finishing off the deal. At the moment it looks like a fee of £23 million fee with 100k a week wage and on a 3 year deal. Which will smash our highest fee by £7 million which is showing real intent be the board and Wenger.

Last week there was a report that Arsenal had bid £17million for Lars Bender who currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen CDM but this will not happen this summer but more likely next summer if we're still in interested.

Yaya Sanogo has been officially announced and will be one for the future he's a fast and powerful striker. He's a French U20's player who has had a decent U20's euro's scoring and looking a great buy. Some people have question this signing but there is definitely a large number of people showing interest in the future of Sanogo and many people thinking that he has a great career in front of him.

Everyone has heard we've shown interest in Manchester United's Wayne Rooney who is getting into what it seems to be a mid life crisis, new hair job one week or been link to Arsenal the next. We would have to bid £25 million plus and over 200k a week in wages which will smash the wage structure. So don't get over excited because the chances are as bleak as could be. But when rumours are getting to much were been linked to Luis Suarez who is worth £35 million worth striker which putting it bluntly will 100% not happen.

We have been linked to Maourane Fellaini who is very good player, who has proved himself in the Premier League but Wenger isn't willing to spend the reported £23 million release clause and the player is asking for 100k a week which is giving him an extra 30k a week. But he's not the only CDM we've been link to Gareth Barry, who is favourite to sign for Aston Villa for £7 million who has only got a couple years left in him so don't worry this will not happen.

In conclusion Wengers war chest hasn't been touched yet but most likely will be used to some extent but for time being the rumours are flooding in but no one has sign on the dotted line but hopefully Wenger will sign someone before they travel to Asia next Friday.

Arsene Wenger is still the right man to turn Arsenal around

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said that he believes manager Arsene Wenger is committed to the club for "the long term", despite media reports linking him with a switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

Wenger, 63, will embark upon the last season of his current contract in August and with Arsenal's trophy drought now stretching to eight years, there has been speculation he could be tempted to leave north London for pastures new.

However, with Arsenal having booked a Champions League berth for a 16th consecutive season, Gazidis believes Wenger remains the right man to take the club forward.

"We think we have got a fantastic manager. We hope that he wants to do what he is doing for the long term. I believe he does," Gazidis said.

"I think he is still ambitious, still driven and sees the potential of the club as he looks forward and I think he is very excited by that. We have a great relationship and he has a great relationship with the board as well.
"So, quietly and at the right time, I think we will make an announcement on that (Wenger's future) when things are all put in place."

Despite the prospect of another Champions League campaign to look forward to next season, providing Arsenal successfully navigate the play-off round, Gazidis accepts that the club must aim their sights higher.

"We want to be competing at the top of the game and in order to do that you have to be in the Champions League, so we are pleased to be qualified, or at least, for the qualification games," Gazidis said.

"But it is not ultimately where we want to be with moving the club forward. We want to be a club that is competing at the very top end of the game and that means competing to win the Premier League and competing to win the Champions League."

Gazidis also expressed hope that Arsenal's prudent financial management and reluctance to build up debts in pursuit of success would pay dividends in the years to come, as UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules come into force.

He said: "The critical thing now as we look ahead over the next season and the season after is our developing financial capability, which will give us a lot more options than in recent years."

Gazidis recent statement was succeeded by reports from various that the club is due a big announcement shortly, but many where quick to debunk such claims and opines its all a PR stunt by Arsenal to hit/attain a projected target of season ticket renewals, which are soon to reach deadline. Time will tell.

More Revenue For Premier League Clubs In 2013/14

English Premier League clubs will enjoy a revenue boost of almost 25 percent next season thanks to a glut of lucrative new television deals, according to a report published by financial analysts Deloitte.

A trio of television rights agreements estimated to be worth £5.5 billion ($8.5 billion, 6.5 billion euros) are due to kick in when the 2013-14 campaign gets under way, as the English top flight cashes in on its position as the world's most popular football championship. The new deals include a $250 million contract with US broadcaster NBC, which will see 380 matches broadcast to American fans over a period of three years.

England struggled in this season's Champions League, failing to provide a single quarter-finalist for the first time since 1996, but Deloitte says the Premier League remains a formidable financial powerhouse.

"Premier League clubs' revenue is estimated to have grown by ... five percent to £2.5 billion in 2012-13," said Adam Bull from the company's Sports Business Group.

"There will then be a significant increase of around £600 million, almost 25 percent, in 2013-14, with the first season of the Premier League's new broadcast deals, taking the projected revenue of Premier League clubs above £3 billion for the first time."

However, despite record overall revenues of close to £2.4 billion, half the clubs in the Premier League are still making losses and Deloitte says they must brace themselves for the "culture shock" of the new TV windfall. The report predicts that outlay on player wages will continue to grow, but says clubs should try to manage the rise carefully so as to leave funds available to be invested in stadium improvements, youth development and the reduction of losses.

"Achieving a more sustainable balance between their costs and revenues and thereby generating more profits provides opportunities or, some might say, a culture shock for clubs," says the report.



"Increased profitability will allow greater longer-term investment in stadia and training infrastructure, youth development and community programmes.

"It also provides funds for the acquisition of talent, as clubs in the top flight can use the self-generated funds to transfer in and retain top playing talent to strive to improve the quality of football on show."

The report says that revenue generated by clubs in the Premier League reached a record £2.36 billion last year, following a growth in commercial revenue of 15 percent.

"Despite operating in a challenging economic environment, English club football's profile, exposure and increasingly global interest have continued to drive revenue growth for the top clubs," said Deloitte's Dan Jones.

"The combined revenue of the Premier League clubs increased by four percent to almost £2.4 billion, with another year of impressive commercial revenue growth, largely focused among the highest ranked Premier League clubs, and relatively stable match-day and broadcast revenues."

Although Premier League clubs generated the highest revenue of any league in Europe, Germany's Bundesliga was the continent's most profitable championship, with operating profits of £154 million. The Premier League was second, with profits of £98 million.

This season's Champions League final at London's Wembley Stadium was contested by two German clubs, Bayern Munich beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1, and sparked fears in England of a continental The new deals include a $250 million contract with US broadcaster NBC, which will see 380 matches broadcast to American fans over a period of three years.

The Premier League clubs this season agreed to a set of enhanced financial regulations to curb over-spending and Deloitte's figures showed that there was no growth in the overall amount of net debt in the division, with the figure remaining steadfast from 2011 at £2.4 billion.

United closed the gap on early leaders Chelsea to one point after Javier Hernandez's late goal secured a dramatic win over the nine-man European champions at Stamford Bridge.

David Luiz's own goal and Robin van Persie's clinical finish gave United a two-goal lead early on, but Chelsea fought back superbly to level with goals from Juan Mata and Ramires either side of the interval.

However, red cards for Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres swung the momentum back towards United, who stole the points thanks to Hernandez's close-range winner in the 75th minute.

Robin van Persie sparked chaotic scenes as the United striker's injury-time winner capped a heated Manchester derby at Eastlands and put his side six points clear of their bitter rivals.

United had raced into a two-goal lead as Wayne Rooney struck in the 16th and 29th minutes.

But Yaya Toure's effort on the hour gave City a lifeline and the champions looked to have rescued a point when Pablo Zabaleta equalised with only four minutes to play.

There was a sting in the tale for City, though, as van Persie's free-kick curled past Joe Hart, prompting one City fan to invade the pitch in a bid to confront United defender Rio Ferdinand, who had been struck in the face by a coin while celebrating the winner.

Walcott was engaged in fraught contract negotiations with Arsenal at the time, but he had the ideal leverage after scoring three goals and setting up two more against the Magpies.

Walcott swept Arsenal in front but Demba Ba equalised with a deflected free-kick.

After Sylvain Marveaux tapped in to cancel out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's low shot, Lukas Podolski nodded home.

Ba levelled again, only for Walcott to score twice more, either side of a brace from substitute Olivier Giroud as Newcastle, beaten 4-3 at Manchester United in their previous game, crumbled in the final minutes.

Walcott walked off to chants of "sign him up" at the full-time whistle and within weeks he had agreed a three-and-a-half-year extension worth £100,000 per week.

Luis Suarez showcased both sides of his personality as the Liverpool striker headed a dramatic late equaliser in a match that will forever be remembered for his bite on Branislav Ivanovic.

Oscar headed in a corner to put the visitors in front but Daniel Sturridge tapped in a Suarez cross to equalized.

An Eden Hazard penalty restored Chelsea's lead after a handball by Suarez, who bit Blues defender Ivanovic's arm while contesting a challenge shortly after.

Suarez then leveled in the 97th minute with a header from Sturridge's cross deep into stoppage time, but it is his cannibal antics that made the headlines and eventually earned him a 10-match ban.

Alex Ferguson signed off as Manchester United manager with an extraordinary 5-5 draw at the Hawthorns in his 1,500th and final game.

Ferguson, fittingly bowing out as a Premier League champion for the 13th time, watched on as a hectic game full of the attacking football that he loves provided the perfect finale to his incredible reign.

United led 3-0, and then 5-2, but West Brom scored three times in five minutes, with substitute Romelu Lukaku completing a second-half hat-trick in the 86th minute to prevent Ferguson from signing off with victory.

Arsenal Season Awards 2012-13 (Vote for the Best Player of the Season)

The season is over as of completing an unbelievable run of a 10-games unbeatable (8 wins) which was enough to keep us in the Top 4.  Let's highlight individual efforts and precious moments of a very challenging year for the Arsenal Team.

This was the game that made Arsenal gain confidence. It proved to be a catalyst to an amazing  run in the Premiere League. Additionally, dropping out of the Team our captain Thomas Vermaelen and Wojciech Szczesny  due to their poor forms, proved to be one of the best decisions Wenger made this year.

Best Defender 
Laurent Koscienly


From a good defender last year he improved dramatically in 2013. In my opinion, right know, he is one of the strongest defenders in the world. His dedication, determination and bravery were significant. Through his career he had a lot of lows but right know he can simply make the difference. The partnership of Mertesacker and Koscienly is one of the most consistent ones. Wenger finally found the perfect combination in defense after experimenting for years.

What can I say about this amazing player ? He is probably one of the best players Wenger managed to sign in recent years. His talent and his vision, which made an impact since the first game, are simply exceptional. One of the most exceptional players this season proved to be the most consistent one. He played overall 48 games, scored 12 goals (all of them in EPL), and provided 16 assists.

Theo Walcott


Theo is becoming better and better and his record of goals this year comes of no surprise. He proved to be one of the most proactive players on the field this year and a true Gunner. His contract extension came as a very happy ending. After all of those players who left, he was one of the first ones to sign an extension to his contract. This addressed a change of policy from a feeder club to an ambitious one, which aims for glory.

Hey guys I'm the new writer here! I am from Sweden and I've been supporting Arsenal since 2012. I was very happy to got the chance to write on this blog, i hope i will do a good job and make the readers satisfied would be gladly if you could give me response on my Twitter.

Today I will talk about Arsenal transfer targets if this is going be a good summer, where in the media it been circulated that Wenger have been given 70 million to spend. First of all if you wanna attract the best players you need to play  UCL  it's the best way to get  the best players is to play there cause every footballers dream is to play the UCL. Ask any young footballer today they want to play there  ,they want to be successful.  For me we are lacking at some positions  mostly i feel midfield is our main priority ,where we really  need a defensive midfield even though Ramsey been outstanding there fighting, winning balls, and start counter attacks , he should play there but i still believe we need a real DM,

I think a great DM would be Celtic's powerhouse Victor Wanyama. His strong good tackler and a classic DM very similar to Patrick Vieira. We have been heavly linked with Song the player we sold to Barcelona last season according to Rigobert Song who is one of Song,s relatives
is saying that he don't enjoy life in Spain. Song was a leader at Arsenal  last season he scored 1 goal and did 9 assists in the BPL.  Last season he  played winning goals and was one of our best players i wouldnt say no to him at  the moment we need a DM  i would like to see Wanyama, his young got talent and is a really good player , probably the best DM we could get at the moment. Arsenal still with Edge For Top 4

'Super Sunday' was not supper afterall, especially as Manchester United and the greedy badger surrendered all 3 points to Chelsea late into the clash at Old Trafford, but Wenger believes Arsenal still on course for a top 4 finish. Arsene Wenger believes the momentum is now with Arsenal and in the driving seat in the battle to claim a place in next season's Champions League.

Arsenal moved back to 4th place following Chelsea's 1-0 victory at Old Trafford against new champions Manchester United. Thats a defining moment in the chase for the Champions League especially for both Arsenal and Tottenham. The Gunners are now unbeaten in eight games, they now have two games remaining and the manager believes maximum points will ensure his side finish in the top four.

"We are on a very strong run," said the manager. "We are ready for a fight and the team is highly focused to do it.

"Definitely the momentum is there. If you look at the points we have made compared to two months ago we are going for it and we make the points.

"Away from home we have won everywhere. We have also had lots of derbies and they are difficult to win."

"We have done that nearly because we dropped two points against Everton and Manchester United but we want to win every game and we want to concentrate on doing that."

..With Arsenal doing the permutations, Chelsea claiming all three points at Old Trafford puts a different emphasis on the midweek clash between Chelsea and Tottenham. With Chelsea currently three points clear of Spurs and with a superior goal difference, from the Gooners perspective, the match has shifted from must win or a must not lose for Chelsea.

Apparently for the White Hart Lane faithful's, Tottenham's have to win at Stamford Bridge to have a mathematical edge over Arsenal. Arsenal can however, only be concerned with their own performances with emphasis on securing all remaining six points available and hope results elsewhere comes in our favour.

Wenger also believes Theo Walcott good form is down to maturity and calmness in front of goal. Theo Walcott struck the decsive goal after just 20 seconds, following up his strike against Manchester United last time out for his 20th goal of the season.

It was the fastest goal of the English Premier League season. Wenger believes the winger's scoring return is a reflection of his growing maturity.

"He is 24 now, he is a mature player. He has improved his finishing, he is an improved player," said Wenger.

"His ability to resist an opponent is better, it was similar goal to the one against United."

But Wenger admitted his side had shown some nerves as they were made to work hard for the win by a Rangers side who are facing next season playing in the Championship.

He said: "You could see that this team they have not played under special pressure and with fear in recent months. They had the quality to stay in the Premier League for me. And they made life difficult for us.

"Overall we played maybe as though the points were vital for us today." Wenger added.

Arsenal are the 3rd best team in the Premier League

Its Monday, Arsenal Trenders, and Luis Suarez still dominates the headlines. While many were at that till late last night, I was busy analysing Arsenal's season so far, in comparison to last season and also in comparison to the top teams. The ongoing 2012–13 season is Arsenal Football Club's 21st season in the Premier League. The clubs attempts to win at least a silverware all proved unsuccessful once again, taking the team's run without a trophy to 8 years. With the trophy drought dilema and despite the fact that Arsenal are finding it extremely tougher to finish the season in the final qualification berth for next season's UEFA Champions League, I sincerely found that only the Manchester clubs are ahead of, or better teams than Arsenal in the Premier League in 2011/12 and also in current season. Again, despite the 'crisis', ups and down Arsenal are faced with this season, the club indeed turned out better this season than in 2011/12.

Although the gap to the two Manchester clubs at the top was simply far beyond their reach in 2011/12 but only 5 points behind Manchester City in ongoing season, with 12/15 points still to play for. Only Manchester United (26) & Manchester City (20), have won more games than Arsenal's 18 in the Premier League so far this season. Chelsea (18), Spurs (18) and Everton have recorded (14), victories respectively. The number of drawn games at this stage of this season has been Arsenal's 'can of worms', haven drawn more games (9), compared to the top 5 teams in the Premier League so far. Manchester United with only (3) draws, Manchester City and Chelsea (8), while Spurs have drawn (7) games so far.


Only Manchester United (4),Manchester City (5) and Everton (6) have lost fewer Premier League games, than Arsenal's 7, losses so far this season. Chelsea already lost (7), while Spurs (8), and Liverpool (9) games. Surprisingly Arsenal pose the 3rd best attack so far in this season's Premier League with 65 goals, only behind Manchester United (75) and Chelsea (66). Liverpool with (61) goals, City (59), Spurs (58), and Everton (51) goals respectively. Another big surprise that despite all the defensive frailties the club already witnessed this season, Arsenal boast of the joint 2nd best defense in the Premier League, haven conceded 35 goals, only behind Manchester City (30), and Manchester United (35). Chelsea also let in (35) goals, while Everton (38), Spurs (41).

Another revealing fact that despite the crisis of the ongoing season & 'claim of possessing worst squad ever under Arsene Wenger' Arsenal currently fares better than last season at this stage. In-fact Arsenal will be in good standing on the Premier League table at the end of current season compared to last season. Arsenal finished last season with 70 points but, already with 63 points with 4 more games still to play. Arsenal won 20, drew 6 and lost 10 games in total in the Premier League last season compared to 18 wins, 9 draws and 7 losses so far with 4 more games to play this season. Last season Arsenal scored a total of 68 goals & conceded 44 goals in the Premier League. Arsenal already scored 65 goals and conceded 35 goals with 4 more games to play. Arsenal finished 21 points behind last seasons Premier League winner Manchester United.


Arsenal currently trailing United with 18 points with 5/4 games left. Last season Arsenal got eliminated in the Fifth round of the FA Cup but managed to lose out in the Quarter Finals this term. Elimination in the League Cup was also in the Quarters as last season. Arsenal's UEFA Champions League campaign once again proved unsuccessful, falling at Round of 16 hurdle same as last season. The race for the top four places this season continued on its twisted path to the end of the season, and results yesterday still affords Arsenal a stronger edge than Spurs and Chelsea, while Everton seems far off. Tottenham and Chelsea remain behind Arsenal with a game in hand, and that game is against each other, that's exactly where the leverage is for Arsenal, including a gap of one and two points above them respectively. 

Arsenal must concentrate on winning their games and at the end of the season, we would found out that we have fared far better than the outcry of 'gloom and doom' by many especially the media. Arsenal are currently the 3rd best in the Premier League and no doubt among the top 10 best clubs in Europe. With the right investment in the summer, the Gunners can definitely end their 8 year trophy drought.

Bacary Sagna is pivotal to Carl Jenkinson's development

Bacary Sagna has excelled tremendously over his six-year spell at the Emirates Stadium, even if the two leg breaks he suffered in separate incidents last season have served to dampen his impact recently. Sagna has been one of the most consistent players of Arsenal in the last 5 years. He has put up a lot of good performances for the Gunners in the last few seasons. But, in the recently played matches, he has struggled with his form Arsene Wenger in February 2013 was quick to defend Sagna and one could easily read from the lines that Wenger was keenly genuine in his words. "He has criticised his own form recently but the things you never question from Bacary are his commitment, his mental attitude, his desire to win and his intelligence," said Wenger. "If he has not been playing as he would expect, it is down to his injury. It takes time to come back, and he has played through a lot of pain – in fact, he is one of the strongest players I have met when it comes to doing that.

He's hugely respected here, and if he's not at the level we know he can achieve then we are tolerant because we know it's not down to a lack of commitment. It's just because he has come back from a long-term injury." Wenger concluded. Those are words from the man who knows Sagna more than all of us. Sagna has been average or has performed below par so far during on-going season and he has been no where near his best, many, always impatient Arsenal fans are already looking to get rid of him, I presume that will be a big mistake if Arsenal let Sagna go in the summer.

Many of the claims that Carl Jenkinson is ready to state a permanent claim to the right back position, I also disagree. Jenkinson's development may have been surprisingly rapid but, its glaring he still lacks the experience to be a world beater in his position, Sagna is exactly what he needs at the club to take his game to the next level. Lauren Etame-Biyer’s and Emmanuel Eboue were still at Arsenal as the clubs right back options in 2007, when Arsene Wenger signed a relatively unknown right-back, Bacary Sagna from AJ Auxerre from the French Ligue 1, many fans were puzzled, no one sees Sagna as Lauren's long-term replacement at the time.


Naturally and as expected, Emmanuel Eboue manned the right-back position after Lauren’s transition out of the team, Eboue put up some impressive performances in that position. Eboue not really at Lauren's level but, has a decent cross in him, and he supplied some sublime assists too. He's passionate about the club. At the time, Sagna had no doubt benefited from the wealth of experience of Lauren and learning the grades from Eboue when he arrived at the club in 2007. Sagna’s introduction to the team saw Wenger push Eboue further up the pitch, while Sagna's performances were so consistent that he earned a rightful place in the 2008 PFA Team of the Year. Sagna didn't rest on his laurels, as he continued to produce consistent displays week-in and week-out, and his eye-catching stellar performances brought an abrupt end to Eboue’s Arsenal career.

Bacary Sagna, now 30 years old still at the twilight of his career, ridiculous for many to believe he is finished. What about what he will offer likes of Carl Jenkinson, Nico Yennaris and Hector Bellerin ? It has been a dream start for Jenkinson, signed for £1.2m from Charlton Athletic, Bacary Sagna's injury at the start of the season has meant a run of starts in the league and in Europe. Already, Jenkinson has packed a lot into a short career. At the start of last season he was thrust into the Arsenal team for their Champions League away leg qualifier against Udinese, in which he played well, and then, infamously, for the 8-2 drubbing at Old Trafford in which Jenkinson was sent off. Such a tumultuous start might have damaged a young player but Jenkinson is made of tough stuff.


Sagna has featured in 22 games so far this season,12 in the Premier League, 3 in the Champions League, 2 in the FA Cup and 1 Capital One Cup games. In the 22 games, Sagna recorded 6 wins, 8 draws and 4 losses [3 home loss- vs Chelsea 1-2, vs Man City 0-2 & vs Bayern Munich 1-3]. Arsenal scored 45 goals and conceded 27 during those games with 8 clean sheets. More surprisingly, Sagna received just a single yellow card in all his 22 games so far this season. Jenkinson has featured in 21 games in total so far this season. 14 in Premier League, 1 in FA Cup, 1 in Capital one cup and 5 in Europe.


Jenkinson is the future no doubt but Sagna is exactly who he needs to tutor him and learn from, considering the fact that before Arsenal signed him last summer, Jenkinson played just nine games for Charlton with many of them at left-back, rather than his favoured right-back, although he feels comfortable on either side. Part of the unforgivable mistakes Arsene Wenger has made over the trophy drought years is letting go of our most experienced players especially when they turned 30 years, the new players or their replacement's with virtually no one to really look up to. When clubs such as Manchester United still have likes of Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes in their ranks, or even Chelsea with Frank Lampard, Peter Czech, John Terry and Ashley Cole, all guiding the young and talented youngsters.

Arsenal can definitely benefit from such gesture. Despite glimpses of signs that Carl Jenkinson is capable to fill in the boots of Bacary Sagna, we can't compare six years of experience of top flight football with just nine games at Charlton Athletics. Older and experience players as Sagna, Rosicky and Arteta should remain in the Arsenal ranks. Arsenal’s under-19 right-back Hector Bellerin seems to know better as he continues to learn the ropes from the veteran. Bellerin has hailed the pedagogical influence of Bacary Sagna. Reflecting on the benefits of training with Arsene Wenger’s first team squad, Bellerin told London24: “I've trained with [the first team] a couple of times. It’s good to get involved with the top players and I enjoy it every time I get the chance. “Sagna is always an example for me because he is a very, very good right-back,” he continued. “He assesses me and helps me with everything. It’s a great experience to train with him.”

That's the benefit the upcoming youngsters get, when they have experienced players around them, its the exact antidote they need to become better players. Recently, there have been speculations that Sagna wants to leave Arsenal. When asked about that, the French defender said, “There is nothing like that. I don’t want to take a transfer at this point of time. I will continue playing in Arsenal shirt till the completion of my contract.” The future Sagna has been thrown into doubt after the 30 year-old rejected the 12 month extension to his current deal, which would keep him at the club until 32 years, the player rejected the new deal from the club despite having only just one year left on his current contract. Talks are still on-going between Arsenal and Sagna's representative as the player opts for a new two year deal. Talks have been positive as a similar deal offered Tomas Rosicky is currently being worked out.
