Sunderland 1 Arsenal 3 Match Report MOTD Highlights & Post Match Reaction from the Manager and Players

Aaron Ramsey's double helped Arsenal's club record signing Mesut Ozil enjoy a winning debut in a stormy 3-1 Premier League victory at Sunderland on Saturday.

Ozil underlined why the Gunners invested £43 million (51.3 million euros, $68.3 million) to lure him from Real Madrid with a role in two of his side's three goals as they were pushed all the way by their hosts, who remain without a league win this season.

But Arsenal were indebted to a controversial second-half decision from referee Martin Atkinson to rule out what appeared a perfectly good goal for the hosts from Jozy Altidore, with the visitors ahead by a single goal at the time.

Ramsey doubled the advantage shortly afterwards in the 76th-minute, swapping passes with Ozil and Olivier Giroud to beat Keiren Westwood with a confident finish from inside the area. On this early evidence, Ozil's hefty transfer fee is money well spent.


Before the break especially, the 24-year-old's movement, vision and range-of-passing was on a different plane to Paolo Di Canio's side, who with just one point from their first four games, look set for a season of struggle.
Özil makes his debut

Arsenal threatened to bury Sunderland under a deluge of early goals but Theo Walcott was guilty of a string of glaring first-half misses.

It kept the hosts in the hunt to such an extent that substitute Craig Gardner leveled from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half, sending Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way with his first touch after Adam Johnson was tripped in the area by Laurent Koscielny.

Steven Fletcher had the ball in the net soon after from Johnson's low cross but the Scotland international was rightly flagged offside as the Black Cats sensed blood.Ramsey met Carl Jenkinson's 67th-minute cross with a stunning first-time finish from just inside the box to restore the lead, before the controversial turning point which referee Atkinson will not reflect upon with any satisfaction.

Altidore out-muscled Bacary Sagna to beat Szczesny with a low finish from inside the area, despite Koscielny's attempted goal-line clearance.

Atkinson, however, brought play back, booked Sagna and awarded a free-kick to Sunderland, to the bemusement of the majority of a 39,000 crowd who expected advantage to be played. It was a major call to go against the hosts and took the steam out of their comeback as Ramsey's second goal of the contest gave the visitors valuable breathing space en route to a third victory in four Premier League games this season.

Operating in the middle of a forward three behind lone forward Giroud, in front of Mathieu Flamini, one of two holding midfielders, it took Ozil just 11 minutes to make his mark, with a key assist for the contest's opening goal. Kieran Gibbs's 30-yard pass from inside Arsenal's half found Ozil's purposeful run down the left.


The midfielder's touch and inviting low cross was swept home first time from 10 yards into the bottom corner by Giroud, the Frenchman's fifth goal of the season, and remarkably the first of his 15 Premier League goals to be scored outside London.

Sunderland quickly responded and Modibo Diakite came close to levelling inside the opening quarter-of-an hour. The defender rose above Giroud, only to see his header come back off the bar when he met a corner from Charis Mavrias, the Greece international making his full Premier League debut for the Black Cats, along with Ki Sung-Yeung, the South Korean midfielder.

Walcott compounded a personally disappointing first half by making it a hat-trick of missed chances, heading wastefully when meeting Jack Wilshere's perfect cross 12 yards from goal as Sunderland were again carved apart by some slick interplay from Arsene Wenger's side.

Gardner's introduction sparked some much needed life into the hosts, who were left to rue Atkinson's controversial call, with Di Canio sent from his technical area late on for his protests.

'The Mesut Özil's party was great at the end as the German enjoyed a fine debut even though Arsenal made hard work of what should have been a simple victory over Sunderland. Only bad news of the day was the confirmation from Arsene Wenger that Santi Cazorla will be out for 4-6 weeks, meaning the midfielder will likely miss 6 games.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud gave Tottenham a worrying glimpse of life without Gareth Bale as his first half strike clinched a 1-0 win in the north London derby on Sunday. Giroud netted his fourth goal of the season midway through the opening period at the Emirates Stadium to maintain Arsenal's revival since their dismal opening day defeat at home to Aston Villa.

That loss had triggered a barrage of abuse from fans frustrated by the club's eight-year trophy drought and boss Arsene Wenger's failure to make any marquee signings since the end of last season. But four successive victories, including two over Fenerbahce in the Champions League qualifying round, have at least temporarily silenced Wenger's critics.

Even the more vociferous of the anti-Wenger faction could have few complaints as Arsenal took the north London bragging rights with a dominant display that left their bitter rivals nursing concerns that Bale's imminent departure may be a fatal blow to their hopes of a top-four finish. With Bale's world record move to Real Madrid set to be concluded before Monday evening's transfer deadline, Spurs have embarked on a frenzied spending spree. Villas-Boas has splashed out over £100 million on seven players and four of those new arrivals, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli, were in the starting line-up at the Emirates. But, with little time to gel, Tottenham lacked cohesion and unity in their first serious test of the post-Bale era.

Spurs were under duress from the start and Santi Cazorla's free-kick brought a fine save from Hugh Lloris with just two minutes gone. The Gunners were playing with an intuitive understanding their rivals badly missed and they took the lead in the 23rd minute with the kind of immaculately constructed goal that makes Wenger's teams such a joy to watch when they hit top gear. An Aaron Ramsey pass located Tomas Rosicky in space on the right of midfield and the Czech veteran quickly shifted possession onto Walcott, who surged into the penalty area and whipped over a low cross that French striker Giroud, fatally granted too much space by Michael Dawson, met with a superb flicked finish past Lloris from close-range.

There was no let-up from Arsenal and Ramsey showed tremendous determination to fight his way past Mousa Dembele before slipping a pass into Walcott, whose shot was pushed away by Lloris. Lloris was then forced to race out of his area to make a last-ditch tackle on Walcott as the England winger surged clear of Tottenham's alarmingly flat-footed defence.

Walcott crashed to the turf, drawing inevitable Arsenal appeals for Lloris's dismissal, but referee Michael Oliver waved play on and replays showed he got the decision spot on. Deprived of Bale's blistering pace and lethal finishing, this was a Tottenham side sorely lacking inspiration. Chadli, Paulinho and Capoue were lacklustre in midfield, while Soldado was starved of service up front.

The loss of England midfielder Jack Wilshere, forced off just before half-time due to an illness, gave Mathieu Flamini the chance for his second debut after returning to Arsenal on a free transfer and offered Spurs hope of a second half fightback. But it was Arsenal who remained the more potent force and Giroud went close when his shot deflected wide off Danny Rose.

Villas-Boas sent on Argentine forward Eric Lamela for his debut following his move from Roma in the closing stages, while Capoue was stretchered off wearing an oxygen mask after falling awkwardly. Tottenham finally threatened an equaliser when Wojciech Szczesny pushed Jermain Defoe's deflected strike out to Soldado and the Spaniard lashed in a shot that drew rejected penalty claims for a handball by Carl Jenkinson. That was the signal for Spurs to throw bodies forward in the frantic final minutes, but Arsenal held firm to inflict their neighbours' first defeat of the season.

Fulham 1 Arsenal 3 : Match Highlights and Post Match Reaction from MOTM Aaron Ramsey and Arsene Wenger

Lukas Podolski scored a brace and Olivier Giroud grabbed his third goal in as many games as Arsenal recovered from its poor start to the Premier League season to earn its first points with a 3-1 win at London rivals Fulham on Saturday. 

Arsene Wenger's team bounced back from a home defeat against Aston Villa in a convincing manner, looking in total control most of the time at a rain-soaked Craven Cottage.

Giroud scored the opener in the 14th minute with a left-footed shot from close range and Podolski doubled the visitors' lead four minutes before halftime with an excellent finish. Podolski completed the comfortable victory in the 68th after being set up by Santi Cazorla. England forward Darren Bent pulled one back for Fulham in the 77th.

 It was Fulham's first loss this season after it opened the campaign with a win at Sunderland.

"It's never easy to play away or win away and we did it in a convincing way,'' Wenger said. ``We had a disappointing result against Villa and it was important to respond.''

The win is likely to appease Arsenal fans, who voiced their discontent and concerns after the Villa loss, urging their club to bring in new players.

Wenger, who is still hoping he can make a marquee signing before the end of the transfer window, left England midfielder Jack Wilshere on the bench to give Podolski a start while Fulham manager Martin Jol handed a debut to England midfielder Scott Parker, recruited from Tottenham earlier this week.

The match was played in difficult conditions, with heavy rain falling on the pitch. Arsenal created its first chance after 12 minutes when Theo Walcott's effort was parried away by Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale, who replaced the injured Maarten Stekelenburg.

Giroud opened the scoring two minutes later, tucking in the ball past Stockdale for his third goal in three games in all competitions this season after Aaron Ramsey's attempt deflected into the French striker's path.

Giroud had also scored in Arsenal's opening 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa and during the 3-0 win at Fenerbahce in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off.

"We picked up where we left off at Fenerbahce and played very well,'' said Aaron Ramsey. ``Lukas has a lethal left foot and proved that again.''

Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny kept the Gunners ahead soon after with a double save, first blocking Adel Taarabt's shot then stopping Damien Duff's right-footed shot in the 16th minute.

Fulham then created chances through Taarabt but lacked the finishing touch. Parker went close after being assisted by Dimitar Berbatov but his left-footed shot from outside the box went over the bar in the 30th.

Arsenal doubled its lead ten minutes later as Podolski showed his finishing qualities, scoring from the edge of the box after a rebound off Walcott's shot.

Fulham got off to a good second-half start and made Szczesny work, with the Arsenal `keeper forced to deny another of Taarabt's efforts minutes before Bacary Sagna's sliding tackle stopped Parker's burst into the area.

But Podolski sealed Arsenal's win in the 68th minute with a shot between the legs of a defender that ended in the far corner.

Bent, on a season-long loan deal from Aston Villa, gave the home fans something to cheer, tapping in the ball from close range after Szczesny failed to block a shot from Berbatov.

Fenerbahce 0 Arsenal 3 - Match Highlights and Post Match Reaction

Aaron Ramsey scored one goal and set up another to inspire Arsenal to a 3-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce in their Champions League first leg play-off on Wednesday.

The North London club now stand on the brink of a 17th straight qualification for the lucrative pool stages after a dreadful start to their Premier League campaign with defeat to Aston Villa.

A potential banana skin in the Turkish capital instead ended up as a smooth ride for the 2006 finalists as Aaron Gibbs and Oliver Giroud with a late penalty joined Ramsey on the score sheet.

The breakthrough after a dull opening half arrived in the 51st minute when Ramsey played in Theo Walcott down the right wing and the winger's cross was allowed to reach Gibbs who crashed the ball into the roof of the net.



Arsenal were trying to bounce back from a disappointing debut to their domestic season when they crashed 3-1 at home to Villa and endured the wrath of their fans who are growing increasingly impatient with the club's lack of activity in the transfer market.

Ramsey then scored a fortunate second goal with 24 minutes left when Fenerbahce 'keeper Volkan Demirel inexplicably allowed a routine shot from outside the box slip under his hands for a mistake that will haunt him for the rest of his career.

Giroud then planted a confident penalty in the top left hand corner after Michal Kadlec brought down Walcott on 77 minutes that has virtually put the tie beyond doubt.


The 'Gunners' have a proud record of having qualified for the group stages of every Champions League competition since 1998 but they laboured during a lacklustre first half that featured no goals and few chances.

Fenerbahce meanwhile were looking to reach the pool stages despite a potential ban looming over them for match fixing that has gone to appeal and will be decided on the eve of the draw.

The odds were stacked against them having beaten English opposition only once in European Cup history dating back to 1969 when they eliminated Manchester City 2-1 on aggregate.

The Istanbul club rarely threatened the Arsenal goal throughout the match and Arsene Wenger's team were able to take a firm stranglehold on the tie with three unanswered second half goals that will silence the critics at least temporarily.

The second leg is set for next Tuesday at the Emirates Stadium.

"In terms of putting us in a good position, it [the win] has given us a bit of togetherness," said Gibbs. "I think people have seen tonight what the team is capable of and we have to take this now into the [rest] of the season.
"It [the goal] was a good moment for me. To be honest I felt we deserved to be up in the first half. I knew that to get an away goal tonight would put us in a strong position and we were desperate for that goal. I felt we deserved it and we got our rewards in the end after a good performance. 
"I thought we were playing well from the start of the game and to be honest I thought we were better in the first half - we got a little bit apprehensive in the second half because we really wanted to get the goal. But we knew that the chances were going to come and it was a case of taking them when we got the opportunity. 
"We know what we're capable of so we don't need to prove it to anyone. But we need to prove to ourselves that we can be consistent and start producing results week-in, week-out. That's down us and that's purely what we're focused on."

Arsenal finished off there Pre Season preparations with an excellent 3 1 win over Manchester City in a sell out in Helsinki. Despite not dominating the play and possession it was Arsenal who took their chances as Theo Walcott struck first with a great chipped goal as Aaron Ramsey provided him an excellent assist to make it 1 0. 



Ramsey then got on the score sheet himself as he rounded the Goalkeeper Joe Hart to make the scoreline 2 0.


The Gunners then showed that they had the killer instinct in front of goal as a beautiful chipped cross into Giroud from Walcott and finished off with a lob from the French striker gave the Arsenal a 3 goal lead. They didn't manage to keep a clean sheet as Negredo scored a consolation goal for Manchester City and the game finished 3 1.

It was a game of good intensity with two teams who were really putting all the effort on. We had a good tactical discipline. I'm pleased with many aspects of our game, even if there are some points to work on. Overall it's positive tactically [and] attitude-wise. We scored goals, created chances and were always highly focused
I think what is important is the strength of the squad. Today is one game. We want to play 55 games and we are maybe a bit thin squad-wise to go through a whole season.

Arsenal 2 Napoli 2 : Match highlights with match reaction from Wenger, Wilshere and Giroud

Arsenal kicked off their first game of the Emirates Cup with a 2 2 draw over Italian side Napoli in an entertaining game at the Emirates. It was a slow start from Arsenal and they quickly found themselves 2 goals down. First half goals from Lorenzo Insigne and Goran Pandev gave Napoli the first half lead which lead to boo's ringing around the Emirates.

However a spirited Arsenal fightback from the Gunners saw Giroud score a bicycle kick to half the deficit then in the 86th minute Koscielny was able to head home to equalize for the Arsenal. In the other game in the Emirates Cup Galatasaray beat Porto 1 0.

Tomas Rosicky expecting bigger things from Olivier Giroud this season

First day of the Premier League season fast approaching Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky expects striker Oliver Giroud to have a greater impact for the Gunners and expects him to beat his goal tally from last season.

'When you come to England it can be difficult in the first season because you have to settle and get used to it.'

'Well it is only pre-season, and even though we won the games, it doesn't mean much,'

'But on the other side, goals always give strikers confidence, whenever they score them. Olly started very well and we know he has great qualities which he showed last season.'

'I expect him to have a better season than he did last year, and I believe he can score more than he did then. If he continues with how he has played in pre-season, then why not?'

Arsenal continued their fine run in their Asia Tour with a 3 1 victory over Nagoya in Japan as Arsene Wenger returned his old club over 17 years after leaving. Giroud opened the scoring less than 3 minutes into a game with a fine header after a great cross from midfileder Tomas Rosicky. Giroud has now scored 6 goals in 3 games and contined his fine run of goal scoring run. Giroud was involved in the next goal as he was tripeed in the box and won the Gunners with a penalty. Penalty taker Arteta gave the penalty duty to Ryo Miyachi as he was in his home town. It was a nice guesture from Arteta as Ryo slotted the penatly with ease to make it 2 0.


The scoring was finished there as yougster Gedion Zelalem provided a world class assist for Theo Walcott who cooley chipped the goalkeeper to make it 3 0. The home fans got a goal from their team as Kisho Yano's 72nd minute consolation goal made the final score line 3 1 to the Gunners.

Arsenal cruised to a second victory in their Asia Tour with a 7 1 victory over Vietnam. Giroud scored first half hat trick. In addition to the hattrick goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chuba Akpom (2) and Ignasi Miquel sealed the win for the Gunners and they now set off to Japan in the final leg of their tour.

Podolski strikes
Arsenal started off thier Pre Season Tour to Asia with an empthatic 7 0 win over the Indonesian All Stars. It was a steady start from the Gunners with only the one goal in the first half coming from Theo Walcottt after a amazing run from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right who set up Walcott up for the goal.

In the second half after a few subtitutions Arsenal scored six goals in the seconds half as youngster Chuba Akpom make it 2 0, before Olivier Giroud scored 2 goals in 2 minutes and Lukas Podolski got in on the act with a goal. Youngsters Kris Olsson and Thomas Eisfeld also got on the scoresheet to make it a perfect start for the Gunners in their Asia Tour.

Olivier Giroud believes Arsenal can challenge for the title next season

Ahead of the new season upon us Olivier Giroud is confident that Arsenal can challenge for the title next season if they can get off to a good start.

"If we start better than we did this season, I know that we will compete for the title next year because we are used to playing together now and have improved as a team," he said.

"We have also improved as individuals throughout the season, especially the newcomers like Santi (Cazorla), Lukas (Podolski) and me."

"It was not easy at all. It was a massive challenge," he said."I hope that as early as my second season, I can play week in week out and keep scoring regularly because it's key for a striker.


"I have scored fewer compared to last season in Montpellier but the ratio, minutes played to goals scored, is good.

"I scored 17 goals in all competitions and gave 10 assists which, for a first season in England, is good. I am happy with the stats.

"However, you can always do better and I know I can do better and there is a lot of room for improvement. That is why I am already looking forward to next season."

Arsene Wenger stated that the performance of the players after going a goal up and a man up was not up to the standards of recent performances but knew it was vital of getting all three points after a 0 0 draw to Everton on Tuesday night.

"It was a positive first-half, but for some reason, and I don't know why, our game in the second-half deteriorated and our passing became sloppy. We played with less pace in our game and you have to give them credit - they are a good side and they tried like mad. They played very well today."

"It became hard, and in the second-half especially I think we played with a hand-brake," "We just wanted to keep the lead without taking any risk and had not enough penetration. When a team is down to ten men they focus on defending deep and they defended well. We did not give them enough problems today."

The boss agreed with the referee decisions to send Sidwell and Giroud off in the game. 

It looked like it, I spoke with Giroud and he said he slipped when he went for the ball and I don't complain about it."

"Unfortunately yes we have to find a solution up front for the final games, but that can happen and we have to deal with it," he said.

"The result is the most important thing now, but the best way to get the result is still to play well. I think the nerves played a part in the second-half as we did not want to be exposed and we lost our fluency.

Fulham 0 Arsenal 1 Match Report - Gunners provisionally back into third place in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win at 10-man Fulham

 Arsenal moved provisionally back into third place in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win at 10-man Fulham on Saturday and are two points ahead of Chelsea, which has two games in hand. Arsenal strengthened its hopes of a Champions League spot after Per Mertesacker's header late in the first half secured the victory. Arsenal dominated possession throughout the game but the Gunners struggled to create any real chances. Arsenal, who started with England midfielder Jack Wilshere on the bench, were given a huge advantage in the 12th minute at Craven Cottage when Steve Sidwell was shown a straight red card for catching Mikel Arteta on the ankle with his studs.


Sidwell had only just returned from a three-match ban following a red card at home to QPR and Arsenal quickly asserted their advantage, with Olivier Giroud grazing the post in the 35th minute. Arsenal struggled to profit from their numerical advantage and Fulham restricted them to few openings. It was, in fact, the home side who created the first clear chance of the game, aided by Olivier Giroud giving the ball away on the edge of the home box in the 21st minute. Urby Emanuelson collected the ball and galloped forward before slipping a pass through to Dimitar Berbatov, whose shot from 16 yards was turned away by Wojciech Szczesny. Emmanuel went close himself in the 40th minute, dispossessing Nacho Monreal before letting fly from the edge of the area. Szczesny again pushed the shot away for a corner.

The breakthrough arrived for Arsenal from an unfamiliar source two minutes before half-time. Theo Walcott's free-kick was headed across goal by Laurent Koscielny and the Frenchman's centre-back partner Per Mertesacker arrived unmarked to head the ball home from close range. It should have been a straightforward victory, but the visitors were unable to kill the game, Fulham kept them at bay and, even came close to scoring an equalizer when Bryan Ruiz curled a free-kick over the bar before a cross from Stanislav Manolev in the 70th minute had Szczesny scrambling backwards to tip it over the bar. 


Wenger withdrew Walcott (who was missing for larger part of the game) and Tomas Rosicky (who was Arsenal's best player on the pitch at the time) moments later, introducing Podolski and Jack Wilshere, but Arsenal could not find inspiration and Fulham continued to prove dangerous. Fulham thought they've got a deserved equaliser. In the 76th minute when Manolev slotted the ball into the net from close range after Szczesny parried another Ruiz free-kick but the sight of a rightly raised offside flag curtailed those celebrations at Craven Cottage.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was later sent off for a similar lunge (as Sidwell's tackle on Arteta) in the 90th minute due to a red card after he clumsily fouled Stanislav Manolev. The decision to dismiss Giroud in the 90th minute was more debatable as replays showed the striker did not make contact with Manolev as he won the ball with his challenge. Victory lifted Arsenal above Chelsea, but both the Stamford Bridge club and fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur now have two games in hand on Arsene Wenger's side. Chelsea will regain third place if they win at Liverpool on Sunday, while Spurs can close to within two points of their north London rivals if they overcome second-place Manchester City. Arsenal welcomes Manchester United next at the Emirates.
